Bonus: real stories from the nineties

I sit, so I eat Kuku-Khan, I drink Hershey-Cola, I look up to the sky - chicken legs are flying there, Soyuzkontrakt ... Nokia 3310 is ringing here, a friend in touch: “Turn on the TV,“ Dovgan-Show "Begins!" "She, - I say, - I'd rather see what kind of exchange" Alice "has appeared. They say that some Sterligov discovered ...".

Then I, of course, woke up and thought: Do not write me an article about forgotten brands? Especially your obedient servant, born in the 80s, is familiar with many of them not by hearsay. The season of nostalgia is declared open!

Drink Invite

The history of the Invite brand is quite interesting. Its creator Sergey Vykhodtsev is a man of unusual destiny. Judge for yourself: go to Africa, spin there like a squirrel in a wheel (incidentally starring in a film about Sherlock Holmes), find that the aborigines gladly drink soluble juices and bring a business idea to Russia. So was born the drink Invite with a killer slogan "Just add water!"

True story from the author of the article

“Once I was invited to a birthday party, where the kings of the table were homemade cake and Invite (yes, it was a hard time, we survived as best we could). One sachet was enough for a horde of kids for the whole evening - we diluted and diluted the drink with water, like the ancient Greeks At the end of the rich cherry drink it became pale pink, but it retained the remnants of taste. And what a pleasure it was to put a few grains on the tongue and catch goose bumps from mini-blasts! "

Why did it not go?

In the 90s, the Russians were inexperienced and happily tried everything new, especially imported. But at the end of the millennium juices in packs and brand lemonades began to appear on the shelves. Compared with them, Invite significantly lost.

What now?

And nothing. In 1998, the entrepreneur sold the brand Invite to partners. The default happened soon completed the case - Invite ordered to live long. “In August, what happened happened. They flew away to a cruel minus, absolutely“ attendants ”should be, and I dumped a second time from Russia”- told the businessman.

Then Vyhodtsev launched to the market porridge "Bystrov", Velle yogurt. In the 2000s and later, he was known to many as the organizer of the International Youth Award for Entrepreneurship (GSEA). He died quite recently - in 2016 at the age of 47. The exact cause of death has not been established.

Boomer Gum

Who is singing, confess! I'm with you. The good wizard Boomer - a symbiosis of Fantômas and the superhero - will forever remain in our hearts.

Spanish brand Boomer did not just sell chewing gum - he was making history

In each advertisement, on each insert, the plot line was traced, so that Boomer was close and more human to us. The cud itself was cool - it kept its taste for a long time, it stretched well, and what huge bubbles it made! Pleased and bonuses - plastic figures and even heads!

True story from LiveJournal:

Deadly-bride: “Once in my childhood they launched a wonderful souvenir: those who take a pack of gum will be given a plastic head of a hero who gave this product a name. On one of the new years, parents under the guise of Santa Claus brought it to me under the door. It was filled with peach and strawberry chewing and was quickly devastated. It was a pity to throw out such a miracle: why, the whole head of a smiling peasant! Well, like any normal person, I first of all made a handsome man a man. He was painfully faded, so I let him down, painted the eyelashes and bright red lipstick with a darker pencil highlighted her lips. After some time a couple of wigs appeared in the house, which were immediately tried on Boomer. The red hat and black hat also put on the unfortunate superhero. Actually, this is how she (the head) stands and to this day. "

Something went wrong?

Boomer chewing gum was also produced in Russia - in Novgorod, Joyko LLC. In 2000, $ 8 million was invested in the enterprise; between 2 and 4 thousand tons of chewing gum were produced annually. However, according to experts, "Boomer" was worth more than other products in this segment and therefore sold more slowly.

What now?

A few years later the company closed down - the equipment was sold to Dirol-Cadbury LLC. The rival Boomer is still thriving now - it releases Dirol and other chewing gums.

Drink Herschi Cola

The same "Hershey Cola" that was perpetuated on the screen by a young actor Sasha Loya. Do you remember this video with a teacher who looks like Water from a cartoon, and a redhead loser who unexpectedly gets a top three for himself? Here it is.

The teacher here is almost the main face of the video, he scares me

Herschi Cola is the brainchild of a Dutch company. The product was conceived as a cheap counterpart of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Fanta replaced Herschi Orange, Sprite - Herschi Citron. In Russia, this replacement was a great success. A significant memorable advertisement played a significant role in the brand's popularity.

True story (musical)

At the very dawn of their career, the musicians of the Splin group were looking for a means to record the first album, Dust Bile. To do this, they participated in the creation of advertising "Hershey".

"In 1994, when there was no money for existence at all, the firm Soyuzcontractinvited me to sing a commercial for the motive Who is developed by Paul McCartney. I did not succeed, Stas, our guitar player, sang. It was an advertisement. Hershey Cola", - recalled the leader of the group, Alexander Vasilyev.

Why did not go?

Yes, all because the same - Coca-Cola and Pepsi pulled the blanket over himself. And they lowered prices - so much so that the once-cheap analogue began to cost more than the original. Well, who would you prefer in this situation?

What now?

In 1999, the owners sold the brand to concern Bavaria. Sold very interesting - without the right to use the name of the brand. Gradually, Herschi Cola disappeared from the radar - Bavari switched to other drinks.

Company "Soyuzkontrakt" (chicken legs fly)

This is a real comeback to the past! Let's just see.

On this video, you can do a test for age. Do you remember this?

The company "Soyuzkontrakt" filled up the country with available chicken legs. It's simple: in Europe and the United States, consumers preferred chicken breasts, and the legs did not particularly complain. Consequently, they needed to be sold somewhere. Russia in the 90s perfectly matched the market: this was how Bush’s legs poured into the country.

Soyuzcontract firmly took matters into their own hands: in 1996, every third leg in the country they sold. “The legs at that time were much more interesting than the aluminum business,” admitted one of the founding fathers of the company. An important role was played by advertising and memorable slogan as an element of corporate identity.

Tru story from blog reader Dmitry Kuchinov

"In our city there were rumors that these legs were not from live hens, but grown artificially in special secret laboratories. This is because they were all right! Then it came to that the right parts were more convenient to put in boxes - they occupied less places, apparently, all the left were supplied to another region. But what was the food for fantasies! "

Something went wrong?

The people ate and began to finally take care of their health. It became clear that white meat is much more useful. In 1998, Soyuzkontrakt got into debt and sold the company. In 2014, Bush’s legs stopped supplying to Russia altogether: it is now believed that domestic farmers fully cover the need for chicken meat.

What now?

Information about the company in RuNet is extremely small. There is no site, there is no Wikipedia page. According to Forbes in 2008, Soyuzcontract continues to import poultry meat. That's just the name is no longer on hearing, and it is unlikely that something says to those who were born in the late 90s and later.

Wagon Wheels Cookies

Do you also remember the funny cowboy - masters in getting into idiotic situations? Now he offered the horse sweets, then he fed the Indian leader with cookies - and in the end he always came out victorious.

Rolling rolling rolling ...

Wagon wheels keep ya rollin!

The brand Wagon Wheels came to the market in 1948. Then they were called Westons Wagon Wheels ("Weston's Cart Wheels") - however, soon the first word sank into oblivion. The association with cowboys and the Wild West is also not accidental: the first letters of the brand repeat the abbreviation WW - Wild West.

Russians learned about the brand in the nineties. As I recall, we perceived it as a purely American product, an opportunity to touch the beautiful life. And the cookies were delicious: especially blue with jam, mmm!

Something went wrong?

The cowboy hat brushed away the 1998 crisis. Together with other snacks Wagon Wheels quietly disappeared from the Russian market. Not until sweets became - to survive!

What now?

In recent years, Wagon Wheels has returned to Russia - though, according to some consumers, it is no longer a cake. The taste is sugary, instead of chocolate - icing, composed of palm oil ... Maybe it's just that we matured?

True story (television)

Look at the cowboy: do you recognize this face? This is Maxim Averin, the main Capercaillie of All Russia! In 1998, Averin was still unknown to the ordinary viewer - he played in the theater, appeared a couple of times on the screen in bit parts. Many people remembered the charming cowboy, and soon Averin’s career went uphill. The artist himself does not comment on this work, but there is a video on his official website.

Waffles Koukou Roukou

Plain chocolate waffle captivated the hearts of children and teenagers for a long time. How did that happen? Largely due to memorable advertising ("Koukou Roukou is a miracle, the best of all!" - admit, who sang it now?), And also because of the stickers, which were much more valuable than the sweetness itself.

The Cucu-Arm brand hails from Greece: Bingo S.A. It was founded in 1970 and entered the Russian market in the same memorable nineties. Advertising on all fronts (even in your favorite “Good night, kids”) has done its job: waffles have become very popular. And yet, if you remember, it was necessary to collect albums of stickers and send them to get a prize ...

True story from blog author Alexey Alexandrov

"I really wanted to at 8 in this very Koukou Roukou. Mom bought it for me - the waffle tastes like a waffle ... But I was very upset when I found out that I threw away the packaging, and there was a sticker ... Then classmates enlightened that this was the most important thing! "

Something went wrong?

The crisis of 1998 became a kind of litmus paper for many products. Cook-Arm waffles were objectively expensive and gradually disappeared from the market, giving way to more accessible counterparts.

What now?

The manufacturing company still produces sweets, including Kuku-Khuk. Recently, they again appeared on sale - to the delight of the Oldfags. They say that they are sold in Pyaterochka and cost about 20 rubles. And even there are stickers!

Chewy Chewits

Oh, this dragon named Zhevastyk - and why he was just poor, did not chew! The Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, inflatable boats and tires - and everything was not enough for him.

At the beginning of 2000, this advertisement was not seen only lazy.

By the way, this ad had an older brother - compare and be surprised!

1986 Chewits Advertising

True story from the author of the blog

"My sister's little sister was scared by Zhevastyka - closed her eyes and began to cry. The growling voice of the voice acting only intensified the effect. True, she ate candy with pleasure - until she caught the link between advertising and product. "

Something went wrong?

Despite the popularity, information about the brand Chewits on the network is extremely small. No loud withdrawal from the market, no stock purchases, no quiet dying or bankruptcy of the company - nothing. It remains only to guess why Zhevastika in Russia has become cramped. All chewed, I guess.

What now?

They say that in some cities of Russia sweets with a dragon are still sold. Certainly they can be bought online - and even in new packaging. But the former popularity of Chewits is no longer visible - this is how past glory passes.

Baby food Bledina

My favorite name. Here's a direct antiqua on unsuccessful naming. Kashi, mashed potatoes, dairy drinks - good quality baby food had all the chances to gain a foothold in the Russian market, if not for the name ...

True story (humorous)

When Igor Ugolnikov and Nikolai Fomenko filmed this parody, many did not even understand irony and considered it for advertising. Innocent was the people in the 90s!

"The whole world has been fed by the poor" - there is a reason for reflection!

Something went wrong?

Yes, here it was originally not so - well, the word "Bledina" does not fit in with the Russian mentality. Moreover, the slogan of the advertising campaign: “Bledina is everything your child needs!” - well, it's so ... It is not surprising that parents were outraged and expressed complaints. Marketers, accordingly, reported these complaints to the French office, but they were adamant. Say, Russians do not understand anything in marketing and simply do not know how to sell.

What now?

Now everything is decent - in 2009, the Bledina was renamed the “Baby”. And someone else said that Russians do not know how to sell! In other countries, by the way, the name remains the same.

Skeletons yogurts

Recall zero: in 2004, Danone launched the Skeleton brand products on the market. The calculation was for adolescents: those who have already left the age of Rastishki consumers, but have not grown to adult dairy products yet. Characters (children-skeletons) were chosen correctly: targeted at teenagers who love everything unusual. The campaign slogan ("Take care, children, about your skeleton"), in my opinion, was a little dragged by the ears in attempts to combine the incompatible: the name of the brand and the possible benefits.

What went wrong: labor story

The problems began when the parents sounded the alarm. Someone Evgenia Martynova woke up famous when she decided to sue Skeletons: they say her five-year-old daughter cries at the sight of this product. Before the trial, Eugene did not reach, but the car was already turning. The expert commission on the ethics of social advertising and socially significant information on the Northwestern Federal District recognized Skeleton as traumatic for the child's psyche.

What now?

Martynova rejected the suit, but after a few years the brand has sunk into oblivion. Now "Skeletons" are sold in other countries - albeit in a slightly modified form. Now they are called "Kostitsa" - the meaning remains the same, only the characters look a bit different.

By the way, the fans of "Skeleton" still active in the network. In RuNet, there is even a petition called “Return yogurt“ Skeletons "". Already 2,265 people have signed!

Stimorol Chewing Gum

One of the oldest brands: Stimorol was founded already in 1915. Gum started selling in Denmark, then spread around the world. In 1992, they reached Russia and stunned inexperienced compatriots with unusual advertising. The movie about a bad biker and a sexy girl-policeman looked like a mini-movie.

Main intrigue: leave the phone or not?

True story with "Yaplakal"

Pooker: “It was recently sold“ Stimorol-70 degrees. ”It seems that they wanted to make it superyaty, but it came out with the taste of camphor. ".

Something went wrong?

No, it was not a crisis that was to blame, not too high prices, or even the appearance of new, more useful products. Big money intervened: in 2002, Cadbury-Schweppes bought the Stimorol brand. Gradually, Dirol cud (the brainchild of Cadbury) ousted Stimorol from the domestic market.

What now?

Now Stimorol belongs to the concern Kraft Foods and is the most popular chewing gum in the Scandinavian countries. Since 2014, she has appeared again in Russia - to our joy. Only now advertising is no longer the same as before. And whether there is, that advertisement - did not see?

Products "Dovgan"

It was one of the first examples of a domestic personal brand. Vladimir Dovgan produced vodka, tea, mayonnaise and even toothpaste under his name. There were quality marks on the products, and “Dovgan-show” was on TV, where good prizes were played.

True story (picabush)

Zaybor: “We had a myth that if you find a beautiful number a la 20202020 or 11111111, you can sell it for big money or exchange it for something very cool, like a car or even an apartment. "

Lorandin: "I remember, I remember, my grandmother kept them. I was even allowed a responsible business - to paste these "passports" into a common notebook. And to even, yes. "

Something went wrong?

There are several opinions why the personal brand project has ceased to be successful.

He writes books and runs the Winners Academy network of smart business clubs.

Nokia phones

One of the oldest brands of our time was founded in 1865. That only they did not produce: rubber products and military equipment, shoes and household appliances, but the market leader in the era of push-button phones. Who does not know the Nokia 3310 - the unkillable shovel, which did not burn in the fire and did not sink in the water!

True story (anonymous)

Well anonymous wrote on the site:

"In view of the prevailing life circumstances, I was left without a smartphone, but since without communication as without hands, I found it in the Nokia 3310 closet and spent a week with it.

Day 1st.

In the morning I sat looking out the window, the sense of hopelessness of life did not leave. An hour for fees, for work is a lot. Gathered in 15 minutes. Gathered wife and children. My wife swore, because she works at home and does not want to gather anywhere.

On the way to work, I discovered that I was not on my own and around, smiling and greeting everyone who was on the bus. I'm going alone in my own half of the bus, people are afraid to go next to me.

At work, did all the work in 4 hours. The boss praised and gave more work. Black and white snake - a cool game, however, I had to get used to the need to control the buttons, but the motility increased.

During dinner, talked with his wife. It turns out that we have different problems that need to be solved.

The children shouted and called their mother, but I persistently did lessons with them. Multiplying decimals is evil. I sit, I read a math textbook for the 4th grade ... "

Something went wrong?

When smartphones appeared on the market, Nokia began to lose ground. The company tried to produce modern products - for example, Lumia smartphones on Windows Phone OS. However, the operating system was losing heavily to “Android” - it all ended with the fact that in 2014 the phone business was sold to the giant Microsoft.

What now?

In 2016, this segment was again sold - to the company HMD Global. Now, under the Nokia brand, both smartphones and regular phones are produced - including the 3310, the beloved one in Russia. Now it has a camera, two SIM cards, microUSB and microSD. So this is another brand in this collection that we lost and brought back again.

Bank "Imperial"

Honestly, few people managed to beat the promotional videos of the Imperial Bank. In the early nineties, in troubled times of trouble, Timur Bekmambetov with the team managed to show that advertising can be elegant and beautiful.

The phrase "You can’t get to the first star" still walks among the people

True story (from the interview with Timur Bekmambetov)

"- These videos then all memorized by heart. "World History" - your idea?
- There is such a person Volodya Perepelkin - our most ancient copywriter. Now he grows cabbage, figuratively speaking, he lives near Moscow, he thinks about the eternal (laughs). At first, he offered me scripts for three videos with the slogan "Precision - the politeness of kings." And then I met Rodionov (Sergey Rodionov - the president of the bank. - Approx. Author). And I realized that it was important for him not only to advertise a bank, but he wanted to be a patron of such an art form as a commercial. I asked him: "Why don't you make a movie?" - "And how will people see him later?" With the rollers it was clearer: they could be shown on TV. Then I expanded the concept: the World History appeared. And then there were five years of wonderful life. We were looking for plots: the historian Kirill Zubkov, a consultant, introduced us to the doctors of science from the Historical Archives. They told stories. "

Something went wrong?

Since 1990, the bank "Imperial" led a hectic activity. Among its shareholders were Gazprom, Lukoil and other corporations. Imperial was the first in Russia to start issuing VISA cards with a ruble-denominated coating. Growth grew, the number of offices and branches multiplied, but ... the 1998 crisis did not spare him. The crisis struck on August 17th. Already on August 25, the bank for the first time revoked the license. The following year, he went bankrupt, lost his license for the second time in 2004, and was soon liquidated.

What now?

In 2017, a certain group of companies "come from the 90s" applied for registration of a new bank. It should have been called "Imperial". Apparently, the triumphant return did not take place: at the moment the bank "Imperial" does not exist in the territory of the Russian Federation.

Blue Water

And again the 90s, this time their very end, when the company F & K Waterhouse released Blue Water to the Russian market.

The advertising campaign was large-scale: few people have seen the famous movie. But bad luck: the innocent name "blue water" sounded terrible in Russian! Do not believe - say it yourself!

True story from the author of the article

“My neighbor was teased by Blue Vot.” The poor kid had the misfortune to go out into the yard with a bottle of water. And since all the children watched TV and saw the advertisement, the nickname stuck to the unfortunate tightly. In general, the unlucky boy ... "

Something went wrong?

Following the speaker of the video, repeat the word "Blue Woth!" steel and residents of Russia. And not just to repeat - and jiving. Schoolchildren were especially zealous. Not those associations caused the name, oh, not those ...

Interestingly, there are companies and products with similar names in the world: Danish cargo carrier Blue Water Shipping, hydrogen generator Blue Water 900. Both, by the way, are present on the Russian market - and nothing. Apparently, the scale is not the same.

What now?

The share of Blue Water in the Russian market was gradually reduced, and in 2007 the brand finally left the counters. I did not manage to find information about the company: whether it is valid, whether blue water is sold in other countries is unknown.

Vodka "Rasputin"

Surprisingly, the vodka with the Russian name was produced in Germany. Since 1992, it began to be sold in Russia. Alcohol is often washed down with "Invite" or "Hershey-Cola" - this is such a pollination of brands. The quality of vodka was good, and the producers made sure that there were no fakes. For this purpose, a special holographic sticker with the image of a winking Rasputin was created.

He winks at us!

True story (folk)

The winking Rasputin was so loved by the Russians that people began to call Grigoriy Yefimich One-Eyed. Now they don’t call me - along with the disappearance of vodka, the meme also disappeared.

Something went wrong?

Despite the tricks with holograms, they forged "Rasputin" often. Under the brand bottle and label sometimes hid vulgar bodily alcohol. The producers, of course, did not like it - the company's reputation was more expensive than the volumes of even the largest market.

What now?

Rasputin vodka has not been on the Russian market for 23 years. And in recent years, the brand has disappeared altogether. Manufacturers produce another product with a Russian name - Puschkin Vodka, but in Russia it is not for sale.

Chocolate "Picnic"

Another brand that we lost and brought back. I added it to the collection at the request of readers. In Russia, Picnic bars appeared in 1993 and attracted the attention of an unusual composition. Real fusion: caramel, waffles, nuts, puffed rice and chocolate. Even camels approve, as TV commercials said.

Camel Kelvin, from childhood in love with Picnic

True story from a chocolate lover Dmitry

"Bars saved me more than once after couples. Especially after favorite physics, when the number of active brain cells tends to zero. You go to the store, buy Picnic, and once - life is beautiful again! Another theme is to chew on lectures. The fascinating thriller" Crazy piece of paper, "and the final was different every time!"

Something went wrong?

Picnic was initially positioned as a solid brand: not just a snack, but an exquisite delicacy. One of the slogans was: "Rather, a banquet than a picnic." It is not surprising that at some point they decided to refresh the brand and make it more attractive to young people - stylish, dynamic and relevant.

In 2005, Picnic changed the packaging design and launched the new King Size bar. According to the company, restyling led to an increase in sales of 77%.

What now?

In 2014, Picnic was updated again and was, at the request of marketers, "pumped to the fullest." Now Picnic is produced under the brand Alpen Gold. The taste remained the same, only walnut was added to the classic peanuts.

Clip 2018 - and again without a camel anywhere!

Exchange "Alice"

Once the dog-name exchange (Alice was called the owner's dog) made Herman Sterligov a millionaire. It was like this: at that time an unknown engineer watched a film about the Wall Street exchange and decided to transfer the idea to Russian soil. He took out a loan of two million and repulsed them for a couple of months: the matter unexpectedly went.

The commodity exchange acted as an intermediary between the buyer and the seller. "Yes, I'm not doing anything at the stock exchange! A salesman came, who bought a broker's place from me, a buyer came. They could meet anywhere: in any bar, in a restaurant, in a toilet. But they met with me and were so happy that they sold or bought brick or cement, that they immediately wrote thanks ... "- said Sterligov.

Something went wrong?

"Alice" was the first exchange, which is why it started so well. But in the early 90s, Sterligov’s followers began to appear. In addition, sellers and buyers no longer need an intermediary and began to trade independently. The era of exchanges ended as suddenly as it began: the business collapsed.

What now?

We will not discuss Sterligov’s person now: a too ambiguous character. I think he is doing well: both products are successfully sold, and gay people do not enter the shops (read below work).

Interestingly, in 2017, he repeated the attempt and created the world's first cryptocurrency exchange. According to the businessman, the exchange was supposed to allow making large purchases (up to 5,000 bitcoins), which could not be arranged in exchange offices.

However, “Alice” No. 2 did not last long: the reason was criticism of cryptocurrencies by Vladimir Putin. Already in October, the exchange closed - supported the position of the president.

True story (unconventional)

I do not know if homosexuals go to Sterligov’s shops. And if they go, do they speak openly about their orientation. This is what I am for - interesting signs hang on the shop windows of the businessman’s shops: “Pida ... the entrance itself is prohibited.” One such sign - it seems, in St. Petersburg - did not please the local activist, she went to court, and Sterligov closed the store in this place.

In response, he announced a subscription to a charitable manufacture of tablets, which grew into a flash mob. For me personally, it causes mixed feelings.

Margarine rama

How could margarine be sold as a premium product? Ask the geniuses of marketing - the company Upfield, they managed to seduce the Russians with advertising.

Rama appeared on our market in 1996, after a few years it began to be produced in Russia. First, the brand increased its position, but gradually began to disappear from the radar.

True story (and again with "Peekaboo")

Rainisa: "Oh, yes, I remember! In the summer, you drive all the Cossacks-robbers all day, in the evening you come home hungry, granny tea sandwich spreads - and with hunger he seemed so delicious :-)"

Timur6i: “I remember that my sister had seen enough advertisements about Rama and almost mourned her mother to buy this divine product. As a result, I tried without bread — I don’t know how you were, but I think the taste was disgusting, not at all , as promised on TV. After that, I no longer believe the advertisements. "

Something went wrong?

The nineties were in the past - people began to give preference to natural products, and brand sales began to decline. Rama did not give up: in 2005, the company rolled out a new concept, at the forefront of which are the principles of healthy eating. In 2008, there were changes in the basic recipe: now the fat content of the product has decreased to 70%, so the product is no longer officially considered margarine. But this did not save the situation.

What now?

In 2018, the brand owners sold the business to investors. Rama is still being produced in 65 countries, but it’s impossible to find it in Russia in the afternoon - I haven’t met anywhere for several years.
